In this model, we have sought to create a beauty that special to cars-with a cabin further to the back and forming a single smooth line, based on the "golden ratio" of classic coupe proportions. The silhouette creates the feel of a high-performance machine, with a hint of powerful forward momentum. In creating the form of the body, the focus has been on stripping away everything that is unnecessary. The sense of rhythm and movement displayed by Mazda cars in recent years has been transformed into a simple three-dimensional shape that aims to embody a "less is more" aesthetic. From the Mazda badge on the front to the badge on the back, a single powerful axis runs right through the car, evoking the look and feel of supple steel, with all the car movements centering on this central vector. The result is a form that is extraordinarily simple yet full of a sense of latent speed: the "one motion form" that is the outstanding feature of this model. Having created a four-door coupe as our basic framework, we have invested tremendous time and care on the bodywork, especially the play of light across its surface.
Also available is Mazda predictive i-ACTIV AWD system, which helps prevent the front wheels from slipping. The system features synthetic oil that maintains its low viscosity even in extremely cold conditions, thus reducing energy losses throughout its operating temperature range. Utilising newly developed ball bearings for all its power take-off and rear differential unit bearings, it also reduces resistance. The all-new Mazda CX-5 features G-Vectoring Control (GVC), the first technology in Mazda new SKYACTIV-VEHICLE DYNAMICS range. By adjusting engine torque in response to steering wheel action, GVC delivers unified control over lateral and longitudinal acceleration g-forces, optimising the vertical load on each wheel. The system is particularly beneficial in SUVs, whose relatively high centre of gravity makes them prone to lateral forces. GVC thus enhances both vehicle responsiveness and stability, helping prevent occupants from sliding sideways and delivering a more comfortable, relaxing ride.
A 15.5% increase in torsional rigidity over the current model reduces flexing that might otherwise slow the vehicle response to steering input from the driver. Increased use of ultra-high strength materials including 1,180MPa steel on the A-pillars and 980MPa steel on the side sills and B-pillars. To enable stress-free conversation in the cabin, great effort was devoted to reducing the low-frequency road noise heard when driving on coarse surfaces as well as high-frequency wind and tire noise when travelling at higher speeds. Compared to the outgoing model, the all-new Mazda CX-5 achieves around 10% clearer conversation levels in the cabin at a cruising speed of 100km/h and reduces noise by some 1.3dB when traveling on rough roads.
How is this possible? For one, by the fact that SKYACTIV engines allow such precise torque control and the SKYACTIV-Chassis and SKYACTIV-Body such ideal vehicle be-haviour. This also means GVC is compatible with any SKYACTIV model. And because it a software control system with no additional hardware, it doesnt add any weight to speak of, which is a good match for the Mazda obsession with cutting every possible gram. GVC thus goes hand in hand with the Mazda 6 philosophy as well as existing technology like i-ACTIV AWD, the carmaker intelligent all-wheel drive system offered for diesel-powered Mazda 6 wagons. Predictive rather than reactive, it smoothly sends power to the wheels that need it when they need it. i-ACTIV AWD actually foresees road conditions based on more than 200 readings per seconds from 27 signals covering various factors such as engine, transmission and windshield wiper behaviour as well as steering, yaw and temperature. Like GVC, it works under any road conditions, even if theyre changing rapidly, while reducing energy loss and fuel wastage from wheel spinning or too much rear-drive operation. So it not only makes driving safer, but also more efficient and, of course, more fun.
